What is Google Sync for Gmail and why should I have it?
Google Sync is built on the same email protocols as Microsoft Exchange. What this really just means to most people is you never have to configure your contacts, calandars, IMAP4 or POP3 protocols on any email client or device ever again.
Dealing with IMAP4 and POP3 is archaic. Google synchronizes everything in the cloud. If an email gets marked read or you add a contact on one device, it's changed on all your devices. People used to have to setup and manage an entire Exchange Server for that, but Google does this for you now -- so take advantage of it.
Benefits include faster email, 99.9% SLA uptime (Google Gmail will be down at most 15 minutes a month, while other providers are unknowingly often down more than an hour each day), you can still use [email protected], calandar for sending meetings, SSL encryption for securing outgoing emails, Google Sync, and more. You can even use Gmail in Outlook if you prefer that email client.
